How to remove carpet stains
Coffee, tea and red wine appear to be our carpet’s biggest foes. An AC Nielsen survey for a carpet manufacturer in New Zealand found that almost one-third of those who responded said one of those three liquids were the cause of their latest carpet stain.
Those with toddlers said 19% of their stains came from “accidents” and someone getting sick. Soft drinks, beer and juice came in at 18%.
Regardless of what caused the miscue, the number one rule is to act fast. The longer a spill stays on the carpet, the harder it is to remove.
When dealing with spills or accidents, follow these simple rules:
- Blot liquids with paper towel or clean white cloth. Never rub!
- Scoop solids from carpeting.
- Dilute liquid stains with water, but don’t overdo it. Sediments in water can leave a stain behind. Re-blot.
- If necessary, use a stain remover recommended by your carpet’s manufacturer or your professional carpet cleaning company.
