Fighting Water With Water
We use water constantly. We use it to wash dishes, take showers and brush our teeth. It is one of our purest natural resources. But as clean, clear and unassuming as water appears, there is an invisible danger lurking in those molecules.
Tap water is full of minerals like iron and magnesium—and minerals can leave behind stains. Whether water is accidently spilled or used to dab out a spot from a dropped piece of food on your couch, water leaves a mark or discoloration, usually in the form of a ring, after it dries. That’s because the water evaporates and leaves those pesky minerals behind.
Solution:
Don’t despair; you can make water marks disappear by simply fighting water with water. Distilled water that is. Because distilled water is virtually mineral and contaminant free, it neutralizes the minerals that are left behind on your couch or chair cushion. Simply spray distilled water onto the marked area, allow to dry and your stain will be gone. Repeat if necessary.
Note: Always read the tags on your furniture and other upholstered items for cleaning instructions. Some fabrics require solvent-based cleaning agents and using water can make matters worse.
If you are unsure how to treat your fabrics or the cleaning code tag is missing, contact your local carpet and upholstery professional for guidance in order to protect your possessions.
